Amazon, FedEx Announce Major Logistics Expansions Near Indianapolis Airport

INDIANAPOLIS โ€” Amazon and FedEx have announced separate but nearly simultaneous expansions of their Indianapolis-area logistics and fulfillment operations, adding a combined 2.8 million square feet of warehouse and distribution space near Indianapolis International Airport and creating approximately 2,200 new positions.

Amazon is constructing a 1.2-million-square-foot sort center in the Cargo District south of the airport, its fourth major Indianapolis-area facility. The new operation will focus on same-day delivery sorting and is expected to employ 900 workers in full-time and part-time positions when fully operational by late 2026.

FedEx's expansion adds a 1.6-million-square-foot hub expansion at its existing Indianapolis hub โ€” already the company's second-largest air hub globally โ€” as part of a $550 million nationwide investment plan. The Indianapolis expansion will add 1,300 positions and increase package handling capacity by 40 percent.

"Indianapolis's geographic position is irreplaceable," said FedEx Ground Vice President Lisa Nakamura. "We are within a day's drive of 75 percent of the U.S. population. The airport, the interstate network, the workforce โ€” Indianapolis has everything a logistics operation needs."

Regional Economic Impact

The combined expansions are expected to generate $340 million in annual economic impact for the Indianapolis region, including direct employment, supply chain spending, and induced activity from employee wages. Marion County and Hendricks County, where several logistics facilities are located, will collect an estimated $18 million in combined property and income tax revenue annually from the two projects.

Businesses supporting the logistics expansion with property services can learn about environmental compliance from Homeward Environmental, which assists Indianapolis industrial and commercial clients with site assessments and environmental services.
